If the Phone Doesn’t Ring, It’s Me

2225209869.jpg  So there I was, sitting on the airplane just before take off from KC, heading to Portland, with the intention of writing about my initial thoughts at the time. A journal of sorts. I was excited to write a journal, as I had done so during the first weeks of my study abroad trip to Mexico in ‘99. But I thought this was going to be different. I was going to get off to a great start with pen and paper. All of these wonderful thoughts were running through my head. Leaving KC, headed for a new experience, and then…about 10 minutes later I fell asleep. Typical. I didn’t expect anything else really. Plane rides tend to make me sleepy. I suppose I was a bit nervous too because I was sitting between two people, perhaps married, but they had left a seat in the middle. I’m not really sure why. But I did hear them whisper to one another a bit while I was “pretend sleeping”. I couldn’t quite make it out, but I’m sure it was something like, “What was that guy thinking sitting there? I was about to move over.” As usual, I strolled onto the plane after my section had been called for seating, and noticing that the plane was almost full, I asked if anyone was sitting in that empty seat. Before the woman could exit her seat to either let me in(which was my thinking at the time), or move to the aisle and then take the middle seat herself(which I thought of after a few minutes of awkwardness), I sat down and prepared for the journey. A bit awkward since my butt was right in her face as I sat down. But what do you do at that point, apologize?
