If the Phone Doesn’t Ring, It’s Me

2836579076.jpg  Well, I got settled into the house. The weather was great, mid 70’s. So I unpacked, and then something happened as I was taking my second suitcase downstairs. But in my defense, these stairs are rather steep. However, before the synical-sarcastics come out of the woodworks, I know now that I should have taken things out upstairs, and then I could have made two or three trips back upstairs to unload the suitcase. Ok, lesson learned, next time, I’m all over it. Hey, how was I supposed to know that as I was carrying my heavy suitcase(with wheels now, I’ve updated. But wheels were of no use here) down the stairs, the railing was going to give out and pull away from the wall? As my suitcase tumbled down the stairs(which really isn’t mine, it belongs to my mom), I managed to use what’s left of my catlike quickness to spiderman along the wall and then jump down about 6 steps onto my feet. Ok, 15 minutes here, and already I had broken something. I will fix it. Eventually.

So, to continue, things got better as I headed downtown. To pick up from my trip to Portland last summer, I headed in the general downtown vicinity and started making random lefts and rights. The key is not to make 4 consecutive left turns or you will end up in the same spot. But hey, if that’s what you’re looking to do, by all means, make 8 left turns. That’s not for me. I did manage to find main street, but really I thought I was about 3 blocks further north, but it worked out because there was a great salsa-merengue-latin jazz fuse band playing. Interestingly enough they called it “Music on Main Street”. So I saddled up and listened in. Great way to start the trip, outdoor music and they were serving food and drinks. But this is a family show, so I only had one. Ok, two. Just kidding, I had 3. Easy there, it was just pop, which I don’t normally drink.

Well, while I was listening to the band, the first thought that popped into my mind was my niece, becuase she has taken a liking to the latin music. So then I returned a call from my mom earlier in the day. It was good to talk. The great thing about this trip is that I hope it can open people to the idea of not looking back and being sad. It’s great to look back onto old memories. But if my buddy John has taught me anything, it’s that you can’t live in the past. Looking back, whether it’s a moment of happiness or sadness in your life, should bring joy. Missing someone is the same. You should be joyful to have experienced, or still be in the process of experiencing those feelings. Each day for me that passes now, I know that while I am gone from my family and most of my friends, I am one day closer to seeing them again. I don’t know when that day will be, but I can be happy and excited about that fact. So trying not to dwell on sadness is key. I look back on time spent with family and friends and it makes me smile. It makes me laugh. It makes me love them even more.

  1. On a side note, I did watch the Simpsons movie. I had given up on them the last 4-5 years, having spent my high school-college years as the #18 fan in the KC area. Unofficially. I laughed. Decent movie.
