If the Phone Doesn’t Ring, It’s Me

g1.jpg Well, Sunday was my b-day. I went to a morning church service at a place that I had located a few days earlier. Great service, I felt welcome. I hope to return again this Sun. After that, something hit me, and not just the fact that I’m not in my 20’s anymore. The previous day I had felt a bit ill, head congestion, stufiness, etc. When I got home, I was out. I had eaten some lunch, and then fell asleep for a couple of hours. I woke up, still sick, with a slight fever. Happy birthday. I did muster the strength to head out later on Sun. with some friends for a gathering, enjoyed some seared tuna. This wasn’t any chicken of the sea tuna, this was the real deal. And there was even a cake that I didn’t expect to see.

Today, I feel a bit better, still rather groggy. However, over the past 3 days I have been receiving birthday cards and that helped my get through any bouts of pouting about being sick. So, to all of those that wished me well, thank you very much. Whether it was a card, or a phone call, or just hanging out, it was much appreciated. Still, as much fun as this day has sounded, and I know, from beginning to end this entry has been nothing but an absolute treat, my 30th b-day probably can’t top one from day’s past: 3rd grade, malibu grand prix(which no longer exists, it was a go gart sort of place in KC). About 8 of us were there, and we all took turns on the track. Finally, it was my turn. I think that I might have had some kleenex in my shoes to make me taller so I could reach the minimum height requirement, I think that was about 3 feet at the time. Anyhow, my head was too small, so the helmet kept moving around. I wondered if I should have some concern, but the guy working thought otherwise, and with a pat on the head, and a laugh as I was driving off, he sent me on my way. It was great. I mean, when you are 8, and driving 15 mph, that is a rush. And for the first 25 seconds I was the guy. But then the turns started coming, and the faster I turned, the more my helmet moved. The slower I went, the better I could see, but hey, I was racing to win. So I floored it, and next thing I knew, the helmet was turned around backwards, and I couldn’t see anything, but I heard some thumps. I had run over the out of bounds cones, and within a few moments, an entire team, a pit crew of sorts, was there helping me out. They made me look more stupid than anything. Well, I suppose I did that on my own. But that really isn’t the good part. Later in the arcade, as I was wearing my mizzou shorts(don’t know how I got those, or why I would wear them, but I did like Derek Cheveous and his bandaids), I noticed a rather tall guy playing donkey kong. Immediately I knew that he was someone. And wouldn’t you know it, there he was, Mr. Danny Manning. After some coaxing, my mom got him to take a few pictures with me, and to make a long story short, after those wonderful moments with me, he gained all sorts of inspiration, and went on to lead KU to the 1988 national championship. At least that’s how I think the story goes.
