If the Phone Doesn’t Ring, It’s Me

164181470.jpg  And here we are, almost through the month of September. Time keeps flying by. Funny thing about time. We sometimes are looking ahead to other things going on, and we forget that at the same moment we are sitting idle, just waiting for time to pass, we could be doing that exact thing we are waiting for, or something different and better. I’m trying to take each day in as it comes. As for tomorrow, I’m not sure what will be going on. But today, I do know that I enjoyed the morning, and into the afternoon, and am ready for the night.

So last week, I feel that it was another fun one for the books. I really just want to enjoy myself. I’m trying, and succeeding so far, in slowing my pace down. Dinner on Thursday evening of last week was at the Leaky Roof downtown. If I didn’t mention this one in my top 5, well, let’s put that baby on the board. They make a great buffalo burger, and some mean sweet potato fries I hear. Just about everything is great there. I just went with the regular fries, and they were tasty. Friday, I went to the KU-Portland soccer game. It was fun, and there were a lot of KU fans in the house. One guy was out there from the 80’s, full on Royals outfit. It appears that Portland was just a bit faster and stronger, but KU played a great second half. I enjoyed watching the match. The Portland crowd gets after it. We ate at some 1950’s diner near the stadium in North Portland, which sort of creeped me out, because there were a bunch of manikins that I thought were going to come alive and trap us in there. But the food was good, and there were plenty of seats, since we were the only 5 in there.  There was a free music box which was pretty cool, and some candy machines with candy from the 90’s. The only problem was, the candy from the 90’s hadn’t moved at all.

Saturday, I managed to do some shopping downtown. I just needed some clothes to gear up for the soon-to-be weather change. I spent 2 hours buying a jacket and sweatshirt, and another hour for a pair of pants. One lady got a bit fed up with my act, and kept asking me every time I came out of the dressing room what size I wore(I guess that after 6 times I would be worn down also). I told her, but I didn’t like the way they fit. So after trying on about 8 different sizes, I ended up going with her original idea. I thanked her for her patience, and she said, “Good luck with everything.” I’m not sure how to take that.  And then, for a little taste of Lawrence, I listened to the KU football game on the radio. I know that a few of my friends from back home were there. I hope that they thought of me, because I wish that I was there, hearing the music on the loud speaker, waving the wheat, and just having a ball. After that, I ended up going to the Pioneer Square downtown with some friends, since they were having some live music and food to celebrate Mexican Independence Day(which isn’t 5 de Mayo for those misinformed few). It was fun, and the music was great.

Sunday, I went to church downtown again for the 10:30 mass. Well, I thought it was at 10:30. Turns out it started at 10, and I was late already(since I was lost), so I got there at 10:45, just in time to make a bunch of noise at a quiet moment as I entered. How embarrasing. I thought that it was on one street, when in fact, it was 4 blocks further to the north. After circling the city for about 30 minutes, I was almost ready to give up. But finally, there it was. I also watched the Portland Timbers play in a playoff soccer match at PGE Park. Wow, that was fun. I am excited to go back again Sat. perhaps. The crowd is awesome, and it helps that the stadium can only seat less than 10,000, unlike Wizards games in KC, when 20,000 show up on a great day, and the stadium seats 80,000. The atmosphere is electric, for those that love soccer. I showed up in the second half to meet some friends there, and within 15 minutes, I saw 2 goals. And now, the soccer beat goes on, with the US Women going for the World Cup title. That is good soccer as well. They have their work cut out for them. Ok, that was quite a bit of catching up. I’ll keep you posted on bowling tonight.

  1. So, for my boy JP, I am a former KU student, from graduate school. I am not a “typical ku fan” as you say. Also, Leon, if you call me by my first name again…
