As soon as I think that I might have had enough of living downtown, it seems that Portland keeps giving me more to do and to see. I’ve been to a lot of places downtown, and there are still more that I haven’t been. And the great thing is that the city extends to the northeast district, which is great, extremely laid back, and the (trendy)northwest, which is probably my favorite part of town, and I really haven’t spent too much time there (I haven’t eaten on NW 23rd since my meal at Papa Hayden’s in Aug, which was great). For a guy from the suburbs, used to driving everywhere, hitting up strip malls to go shopping or hang out, I don’t find myself missing that aspect of daily living like I thought that I would. I rather enjoy walking around the city, checking out the people and the sites.
The week went well, other than the constant drizzle that came down the past few days. A few days, it rained heavily. But rumor has it that the sun will be out for the next several days. As long as the temperature stays in the 50’s like it has been, its really quite tolerable(for now, I might be singing a different tune by Jan.). Our bowling team is now in the final four as we advanced in the single elimination tourney on Tues. I pitched in with a 166, matching my season high. We were on the ropes after 3 frames, and down over 50 pins, but we caught fire, and the other team panicked. It seems that my mom thinks she can beat me, and I’m still looking forward to the head to head matchup when I get home, or pehaps in Nov. if she comes to visit for Thanksgiving.
A few new additions to my places to hang out, as I continue to add to the list. A nice, quaint cuban restaurant called pambiche(check out pambiche.com) was just the call on Friday with some friends. The food was great, although we didn’t eat a full meal, just appetizers and desserts, but those were both second to none. The place is very small, with about 4-6 tables outside(with heatlamps that I didn’t notice, otherwise even with the rain we would have eaten outside) and enough room inside for about 30-35 people. The wait wasn’t bad, the same as any other place. We had variations of empanadas, fried platains, beans and rice, and the dessert we had was their twist on pineapple upside down cake and german chocolate cake, both of which were soooooo good. The best part about Pambiche is that there are so many items on the menu, you have to go back just to get another taste.
The City resaurant is a good spot for games on tv. Last week we went by, and there was the mix up with the “KU” game being on tv(I meant kansas, she thought I meant Kentucky) so we left. But Saturday, the game was on, even though we were trumped by Ohio St. and USC, who had preference on the big screens, but we had a table and a good view of the tv’s that the KU-Colorado game was on. I was on edge the entire game. It’s great to see the Hawks on tv, and they are on ESPN2 against Texas A&M this Sat. There was a group of about 10 other ku fans in the house, but I’m sure for basketball The City will have about 50 fans for those games since it is the ku alumni hoops destination. Even though not on the menu, the onion rings are the call. Stay away from the chicken strips, a bit too salty. But for atmosphere, its the best sports bar in Portland.

And what about those Chiefs. 4-3 and in first place! I didn’t watch the game at all, but I did manage to get home to listen to the final 1:30 on the radio. I made a bet with a guy from work. He owes 30 pushups and a lunch that values $8-$10. Maybe I’ll go with Baja Fresh.

Agreed, chipotle is good, but baja fresh is also good. It depends on what one wishes to eat.
