This past weekend, I spent time in Eugene, which is south of Portland. The University is located there, and OSU is just a bit north of Eugene, in Corvallis, but of the two, I prefer Eugene. Not that I am an Oregon Ducks fan by any means, but I really enjoyed the town, which reminded me a lot of Lawrence. It was very laid back, and the campus was just beautiful.
The atmosphere at the football game was electric. It was the largest crowd in the stadiums history, almost 60,00(about 59,400). The usual capacity is 54,000, but there were several thousand standing in the aisles and walkways. Tickets were selling for 300 plus, for those silly enough to pay that much. One person we heard paid over 400. Ours luckily, after wandering around for over an hour, were 80 a piece, which was twice the face value, but we were only 20 rows back near one of the endzones. It was a great location, and luckily we were on the north side of the stadium, so the sun was on us most of the game. I did buy an Oregon t-shirt before kickoff to blend in, but I also had my KU sweatshirt on most of the game. It was fun to hear the announcer over the loud speaker, when he was giving score updates, he said Nebraska 39…Kansas 76! The crowd gave a huge gasp. People were taking note of Kansas football in Eugene, especially when we were watching the game dowtown on tv. Oklahoma State is next on the plate. Should be a tough game. Did anyone go to the KU-Nebraska game?
Also, before and after the game, I was lucky enough to walk on the Steve Prefontaine trail. I actually jogged for about 50m after the game, so now I can say that I have run on the trail. If you don’t know who he is, google his name. He was, in his time, the best American distance runner. For me, he’s the best. That trail was so soft, padded with wood chips, sure does beat running on the pavement. I took some nice pics of that area. It was a perfect day, about 60 and sunny. I hope to make it back to Eugene again soon, maybe even before the Olympic trials in July.
